Are people better off today?

Are You Better Off, Worse Off, or About the Same?

Are People Better Off Today?

Somewhere along the way, things started to feel… different.

Not dramatically. Not all at once. Just enough that you notice it in small moments.

Maybe it’s at the grocery store. Maybe it’s when a bill hits a little harder than it used to. Maybe it’s just a quiet thought that pops up now and then—this used to feel easier.

But the truth is, that feeling doesn’t land the same for everyone.

For some people, things are better than they’ve ever been. More opportunity, more freedom, more control over their lives. For others, it feels like they’re working just as hard—maybe harder—and not getting the same return. And then there are a lot of people somewhere in the middle… not struggling, not thriving, just kind of holding steady and hoping that’s enough.

It’s easy to jump straight into why. What changed, who’s responsible, what needs to be fixed.

But before any of that, it might be worth asking something simpler.

Where are people actually at right now?

We’re asking people to take a moment and reflect on their own situation—whether they feel things have gotten better, worse, or stayed about the same over the last 20 years. How long they’ve felt that way. And what, if anything, has played the biggest role in shaping that feeling.

Nothing complicated. Just an honest check-in.

This is just a starting point—not a conclusion or a debate, but a way to understand where people are before we go any further.
